Mama’s Greek Cuisine: A True Taste of Family, Tradition & Greek Hospitality in Tarpon Springs

Sometimes you leave a comment on Facebook and think nothing of it.

Then the restaurant invites you to dinner.

That’s exactly what happened with Mama’s Greek Cuisine.

I happened to comment on one of their Facebook posts with a simple:

“Looks amazing!!”

A short time later, Mama’s reached out to Foodie Mob and invited my wife and me to experience the restaurant for ourselves.

Well… you don’t have to ask me twice. 😂

So off we went to Mama’s Greek Cuisine in Tarpon Springs to taste some of their homemade Greek specialties.

And let me tell you right up front:

This was one heck of a meal.

But what I discovered at Mama’s went beyond the food.

This is a true family-owned restaurant, and you can feel that the moment you walk through the door.

Walking Into Mama’s

Mama’s has that down-home, comfortable feeling that makes you want to sit down and stay awhile.

Family pictures on the walls add a really nice personal touch. They give you a glimpse into the people and history behind the restaurant.

The service was excellent, but what really stood out was the family itself.

My wife and I were welcomed warmly, and as we spent more time there, it honestly started to feel less like we were visiting a restaurant and more like we had been invited into someone’s home for dinner.

And that kind of hospitality?

You can’t fake it.

Let’s Get To The Food

Mama’s gave us the chance to experience a pretty wide range of their menu, and that’s exactly what I love about a tasting.

We weren’t limited to one appetizer and an entrée.

We got to sample traditional Greek dishes, seafood, salads, Saganaki, homemade Sangria, and enough dessert to make me question why I thought saving room would be a problem. 😂

Let’s dig in.

Dolmades

I’ve had dolmades before, and as luck would have it, I had just tried them recently at Mr. Souvlaki.

So I had something fresh in my mind to compare them to.

Mama’s version?

I liked it better.

The dolmades themselves were really good, but what really pushed them over the top for me was the lemon sauce.

That sauce brought the whole dish together.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the difference.

Horiatiki Salad — And Then Came The Anchovies

This one surprised me.

Mama’s Horiatiki salad came loaded with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, olives, and feta.

And everything tasted fresh.

Really fresh.

The freshness took me right back to being a kid and eating vegetables just picked from the garden.

Then I noticed something I wasn’t expecting.

Anchovies.

Now, you know how salty anchovies can be.

I wasn’t sure what I’d think.

But somehow, that salty bite worked.

Actually, I think the anchovies made the salad.

They added another layer of flavor without taking away from the freshness of everything else.

And that combination of fresh vegetables, olives, feta, and that unexpected hit of anchovy brought back a memory from my childhood.

You can’t put that on a menu.

You have to experience it.

Mama’s Greek Salad

While I was digging into the Horiatiki, my wife had Mama’s Greek salad with potato salad.

This one was different from the Horiatiki I was eating because it was a lettuce-based Greek salad, topped with potato salad.

She really enjoyed it.

I also liked that we got to experience both versions during the tasting. It gave us another look at how Mama’s does Greek salads—mine was the traditional Horiatiki style with fresh vegetables, olives, feta, and that surprise hit of anchovy. Meanwhile, hers brought lettuce and potato salad into the mix.

Two salads. Two different experiences. Both worth trying.

Char-Grilled Octopus — My First Time!

Now this was new territory for me.

I had never eaten octopus before.

Not once.

And when it came to the table, I’ll be honest…

It didn’t exactly look like something I was dying to try. 😂

But sometimes you’ve just got to take the bite.

So I did.

Wow.

The char-grilled flavor gave the octopus a great smoky taste, and the texture was meaty but actually quite enjoyable.

I had no idea what to expect.

Turns out, I really liked it.

I was hooked.

For my first experience with octopus, Mama’s certainly made an impression.

Saganaki — OPA!

Then came my favorite dish of the entire tasting.

Saganaki.

The flaming cheese came to the table, and then they lifted it into a flaming tower.

OPA! 🔥

Come on… you can’t enjoy that.

But here’s the important part.

The flames may grab your attention, but the flavor is what sold me.

The Saganaki was absolutely fantastic.

Of everything we tasted, this was my favorite.

It wasn’t just a show.

It delivered on the plate, too.

And that’s exactly what I want from a dish like this.

Mama’s Homemade Sangria

Then came Mama’s homemade Sangria.

And this was another showstopper.

It was homemade, refreshing, and obviously something the family takes great pride in.

Pete told us his father created the recipe years ago, and it remains a family secret.

Now that’s pretty cool.

There’s a lot of experience behind that glass.

This isn’t some Sangria they just decided to throw together yesterday.

This is Mama’s Sangria.

And after tasting it, I can understand why they keep the recipe in the family.

Whatever You Do — Save Room For Dessert!

Seriously.

Do not leave Mama’s without dessert.

We tried three:

Baklava.
Galaktoboureko.
Loukoumades.

And all three were excellent.

The Baklava was outstanding — honestly, probably some of the best I’ve had.

The Galaktoboureko, with that Greek custard, was fantastic.

But the Loukoumades?

Those were my favorite.

These little Greek honey puffs were incredible. They reminded me a little of cream puffs, and I really enjoyed them.

And here’s something else I loved:

They’re all homemade.

So don’t fill up too much before dessert.

Save room.

You’ll be glad you did.

The Foodie Mob Quick Take

Mama’s gave us a full taste of what they’re all about, and there were plenty of surprises along the way.

The dolmades were better than the version I had recently at Mr. Souvlaki, and that lemon sauce was a big part of it.

The Horiatiki salad was packed with fresh vegetables, and the unexpected anchovies somehow made it even better.

The octopus was a first for me — and I loved it.

The Saganaki came out in flames, gave us the obligatory OPA!, and ended up being my favorite dish of the meal.

The homemade Sangria had a family story behind it and was every bit as enjoyable as you’d hope.

And dessert?

Don’t skip it.

That’s all I’m saying.

The Vibe

Mama’s has something that’s getting harder and harder to find:

a genuine family atmosphere.

The pictures on the walls tell part of the story.

The food tells another part.

But meeting the family tells the rest.

The service was excellent, and my wife and I felt welcome from the moment we arrived.

The warmth and friendliness felt completely natural.

It felt like home.

And that may have been my favorite part of the entire visit.

Final Thoughts

Funny how a simple Facebook comment can turn into a meal you remember.

I originally told Mama’s:

“Looks amazing!!”
