When I first visited Pizza Joe’s, I had never really experienced Buffalo food before. My friend Melissa, who is from Buffalo, was determined to change that. She told me I needed to try the food and especially recommended a sub called The Royal.

I had my doubts.

But I was willing to give it a shot.

And that’s how my first Foodie Mob visit to Pizza Joe’s began.

The Vibe

You don’t have to wonder what kind of restaurant you’re walking into.

If you’re a Buffalo Bills fan, you’ll know immediately.

Pizza Joe’s is filled with Buffalo Bills memorabilia, giving the restaurant a strong hometown feel. As a memorabilia collector, I appreciated the time and effort that went into creating the atmosphere.

I’m a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, so naturally I had to give the Buffalo fans a little grief. 😂

Sorry, Bills Mafia.

The restaurant has plenty of seating, and during our visit, Sissy, one of the owners, greeted us with a friendly smile. She took the time to explain the menu and helped make us feel welcome.

That personal connection stood out to me.

What We Ordered

For our first Foodie Mob visit, we ordered:

• The Royal Sub
• 16-inch Pepperoni Cheese Pizza
• Hot Wings
• Naked Wings

There was plenty to try, but one item immediately became the star of the meal.

The Royal Sub

If you’re visiting Pizza Joe’s for the first time, The Royal is something I would put on your radar.

The Royal features sausage and capicola, two of my favorite ingredients. We ordered ours with lettuce, tomato, provolone cheese, oil, mayo, and onion on a toasted Constanza’s roll.

And that toasted roll makes a difference.

The combination of the sausage and capicola worked extremely well together, and the toppings added another layer to the sandwich without taking away from the meats.

This sub was the bomb.

Melissa was right.

I went into Pizza Joe’s unsure about Buffalo food, and The Royal convinced me I needed to keep exploring it.

The Pizza

Next up was the 16-inch pepperoni cheese pizza.

This is a big pizza, easily enough to share with a group.

The crust was cooked to perfection during our visit, and Pizza Joe’s also offers pizza by the slice for anyone who isn’t looking to order a whole pie.

The menu also includes specialty pizzas, giving you plenty of options beyond a traditional pepperoni pizza.

The Wings

Then came the wings.

We ordered both hot wings and naked wings.

The wings were crispy and came with celery, carrots, and blue cheese. The hot sauce had a flavor that really stood out.

One thing to know before ordering: wings can take some time because they are cooked to order. During our visit, John and Sissy told us to expect up to about 20 minutes.

My advice?

Be patient.

They’re worth waiting for.

My first experience with Buffalo food started because Melissa convinced me to give it a try.

I’m glad I listened.

John and Sissy clearly care about their restaurant and their customers, and it shows in the experience.

Just don’t expect me to say that Buffalo has a better football team. 😂
