Mr. Souvlaki: Our First Taste of a Tarpon Springs Greek Favorite

I’ve been wanting to check out Mr. Souvlaki for a while, so when my wife and I decided to go out for lunch, I figured this was our chance.

I had already been looking over the menu, and there were a few things I wanted to try. My wife? Well, she went with her usual go-to. 😂

That’s one thing about going out to eat with your wife — you can have a whole menu of Greek food sitting in front of you, and she’s still going to order what she knows she likes.

So, we settled in for lunch and started with a Dolmades appetizer.

If you’ve never had Dolmades before, they’re grape leaves stuffed with seasoned ground beef and rice, served with an egg-and-lemon sauce.

Neither of us had really had them before, so this was something different for us.

And you know what?

We liked them.

The Dolmades were pretty good, but that egg-and-lemon sauce was really good. That was probably the biggest surprise of the appetizer for me.

We also had a Greek salad. It was good— just a smaller version of a Greek salad. It was a nice little addition to the meal and gave us something fresh to go along with everything else.

Then Came the Main Course

I went with the Lamb Shank with rice, and I’m glad I did.

That lamb shank stole the show.

The lamb was very tender. The sauce was good, and the rice was cooked just right. But the lamb itself really got my attention.

You know those moments when you take a bite and think, Yep… I’m glad I ordered this.

That was the lamb shank for me.

So far, lunch was going pretty well.

I was enjoying my lamb; we both liked the Dolmades, and the Greek salad was good.

Then we got to my wife’s Fish Fry.

Now, fish fry is one of her go-to meals. She knows what she likes, and she was looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, this one just didn’t do it for her.

The fish was overcooked, and it wasn’t what she had hoped for.

And I’m going to tell you that because that’s what happened at our table.

Not every dish is going to be a home run.

The Vibe

One thing we both really liked about Mr. Souvlaki was the atmosphere.

It was cozy, comfortable, and it actually felt like a Greek restaurant.

I like that.

When you walk into a restaurant like this, you want to feel like you’re experiencing something. Mr. Souvlaki gave us that feeling.

And the service?

Excellent.

They paid attention to detail and made sure we were taken care of throughout our lunch. That goes a long way with me.

Foodie Mob Quick Take

So what did I think?

I’d say we had a good first visit.

The lamb shank was the clear winner for me. The Dolmades were something new that we enjoyed, and that egg-and-lemon sauce was excellent.

The Greek salad was good, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere felt right.

The fish fry, unfortunately, was a miss.

But here’s the thing…

I would go back.

And that’s important.

I’m not saying everything we ate was perfect. It wasn’t.

But we enjoyed enough — and there was enough on that menu I still want to try—that I’m not finished with Mr. Souvlaki.

Final Thoughts

Walking out of Mr. Souvlaki, I had mixed feelings about the food, but not about the restaurant.

I really enjoyed the lamb shank. We found something new with the Dolmades, and the service and atmosphere were both excellent.

My wife’s fish fry didn’t live up to expectations, and I’m not going to pretend it did.

But I’m also not going to let one disappointing dish decide the whole experience.

We’re going back.

I want to try something different next time, and my wife wants to give that fish fry another chance.

I don’t know when that second visit will be, but when we go back, I’ll let you know what happens.

Because sometimes one meal tells you everything.

And sometimes…

it just makes you want to come back for another bite.
